Description

Consciousness may be the most familiar thing in your life and the hardest thing to explain. This course begins with the basic mystery of subjective experience, then guides you through the biggest historical and contemporary attempts to make sense of mind, self-awareness, qualia, free will, dreams, altered states, animal consciousness, and the possibility of conscious machines.

You will encounter major historical and contemporary approaches in accessible language, from Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Hume, Kant, and William James to phenomenology, analytic philosophy of mind, cognitive neuroscience, embodied cognition, and current AI-consciousness research. Along the way, you will learn how first-person description, thought experiments, psychological tasks, subjective reports, clinical assessments, and neuroscience contribute different kinds of evidence.

The course also brings consciousness into the present. You will explore attention, perception, predictive processing, Global Workspace Theory, Integrated Information Theory, illusionism, panpsychism, embodied cognition, and the challenge of measuring consciousness in humans, animals, and possible future AI systems.

In addition to classic philosophical cases, you will work with contemporary examples such as blindsight, split-brain research, disorders of consciousness, anesthesia, animal problem-solving, and current claims about chatbot or machine sentience. You will also compare how researchers study consciousness through neural correlates, behavioral tasks, subjective reports, and clinical tools used to assess awareness in patients with severe brain injury. Real-world examples, reflection prompts, and debates help turn abstract ideas into concrete understanding.
